The International Arab Charity (IAC) is a British Arab charity focused on supporting causes throughout the MENA region. The IAC was established in 1967 in London, and was the first Arab charity to be registered in the UK in 1976. We are a secular and inclusive charity whose principal aim is humanitarian, though our objectives also encompass supporting educational and training programs, and promoting Arab culture.
Today, we are proud to be a lean, agile organization operated and successfully making an impact due solely to the commitment of volunteers. As we choose to work remotely our overheads are minimal allowing for virtually all funds raised go directly to the individuals, groups and causes for whom we work.
We welcome and invite everyone equally, especially non-Arabs to ask us, learn more and to support our very worthy causes. What affects one of us ultimately affects us all.
1967... OUR BEGINNING
Dr. Esmat Al Said was moved to establish The IAC in 1967 to address the urgent medical and humanitarian needs of the refugees of the new diaspora as a result of the Six Day War.
Born to a prominent family with strong relationships within many of the MENA royal families and the diplomatic communities, she reached out to them for their support..And when she asked, they gave resulting in being graciously entrusted with generous donations! Her donors not only believed in her, but also in the dedication and professionalism of the many people who came on board to help her.
Arab Embassies contributed greatly to The IAC allowing its mission to eventually broaden offering not just aid in crisis but also to promote cultural understanding between the MENA region and Britain and beyond.
The young charity -originally named Arab Women's Council Charities (AWC) - held events to help Arab brands and products gain exposure in the UK by organising fashion shows and craft fairs. Receptions were held inviting the British public in to further cultural understanding. Members of the IAC also dedicated time visiting London hospitals showing support to the Arab patients.
1976 was a proud year for the IAC becoming the first Arab charity to be officially registered with the Charity Commission in the UK.
Dr. Esmat Al Said passed away in 1997, but today, we continue the work to the same high standards set for us by Dr.Esmat Al-Said and all those who joined in her belief that a difference could be made.
